The 47th Annual Red Invitation!
The Red Invitation began in 1976 when one retailer decided to hold a one-day pre-holiday Sunday sale, promoting with a simple “red invitation.” The event quickly grew as neighboring merchants joined the tradition, eventually expanding throughout Winnetka’s shopping districts and then to Northfield and Glencoe in 2011 and 2021 respectively.
Traditionally held on the second Sunday after Thanksgiving, the Red Invitation offers a distinctly local alternative to Black Friday and big-box shopping. For nearly five decades, shoppers have discovered exceptional merchandise, personalized service, and the welcoming experience that our villages do best. The event is a win for shoppers and merchants alike, supporting local businesses while contributing to the vibrancy of our retail districts and communities.
Now celebrating its 47th event, Red Invitation weekend has grown into a true holiday tradition for the whole family, complete with Village Tree Lightings in Winnetka and Northfield, carolers and children’s choirs, visits from Santa and his reindeer, and more. It’s more than a sale—it’s a Holiday Weekend celebrating shopping local, community, and the magic of the season.
