Northfield Community Resources

Northfield is the best of worlds, a thriving, desirable suburb and a village with hometown charm. Incorporated in 1926 and located 20 miles from the heart of Chicago’s loop. With a population of approximately 5,700 attracts those looking for a small-town way of life near large city.

Northfield’s personality is felt in its rural, countryside atmosphere. When the village was incorporated, a commitment was made to protect open spaces, a commitment that continues today as the Village successfully balances that prized open space with commercial development. There are more than 30 acres of open parkland, including a bird sanctuary. The village is one of the few suburbs that issues licenses for keeping horses.

The Village of Northfield is a warm, family-oriented community with scenic properties, an outstanding school system and a wonderful mix of businesses.

The Eden’s Expressway (I-94) is east of Northfield and the Tri State Toll way (I-294) is less than four miles west of Northfield. O’Hare Airport is 25-minute drive. Commuters are minutes from the Winnetka and Glenview Metra stations.

Business, Shopping and Dining

Northfield offers a prosperous environment for retailers, professionals and businesses, and is proud to be the world headquarters of companies such as Kraft Foods and Stepan Company. Unique specialty stores create a strong customer base in Northfield’s retail business district. There are many outstanding shops in Northfield that offer: antiques, specialty gifts, home accessories, jewelry, women’s clothing, women’s accessories, children’s clothing, children’s items, shoes and sporting goods. These owner-operated shops are dedicated to the community, offering shoppers friendly, personal service and one-of-a-kind shopping experience.

There are also wonderful dining options in Northfield. Residents and non-residents alike can choose from sophisticated fine dining, charming cafes, shops with specialty foods and fun family restaurants.

Education

Northfield’s schools are often called the “crown jewel” of the community. Why the success? Factors such as: high student test scores, spending per pupil and low student-teacher ratios. Also low faculty turnover, a cost-conscious approach to spending and a solid partnership between parents, children and the community also help Northfield’s school thrive. High school students attend New Trier High School. Several private elementary and secondary schools also serve the Northfield area.

Public Library

The Winnetka-Northfield Public Library District has been serving the community of Northfield since 1974. The Northfield Branch hosts adult and children’s programs throughout the year. The Branch facility, remodeled and expanded in May 2000, has a friendly, warm atmosphere. There is a separate children’s area where there is drop-in story time. As part of the Winnetka-Northfield Library District, the branch is also a member of the North Suburban Library District (NSLD) and the Co-operative Computer Service (CCS).

Recreation

Residents enjoy a variety of recreational activities through the park districts and area private clubs. The Northfield Park District and the Winnetka Park District serve different areas of the community and offer a large variety of year-round activities. The Northfield Park District incorporates more than 30 acres with lighted tennis courts, baseball diamonds and soccer fields. There is an outdoor ice skating rink, batting cage and volleyball court. Golfers play at the Winnetka Park District’s par 3, 18-hole course. There is ample boating, fishing, bike trails, jogging trails and bridle paths in the nearby Cook County Forest Preserve and Skokie Lagoons.

Northfield residents are actively involved in numerous community events and organizations. Popular annual events include: the PTO Family Fair, the 4th of July celebration, Ribfest, and The Winnetka-Northfield Farmers Market; which is operated by the Winnetka-Northfield Chamber of Commerce Recognized by both North Shore Magazine and the Chicago Tribune, Northfield is proud to have one of the best Farmers Markets on the North Shore. A Saturday tradition from the end of May through October

The North Shore Senior Center (NSCC), located in Northfield, is a community resource for all ages. While focusing on programs for active adults 50+, as well as services for those with particular needs, NSSC offers the community an art gallery, concerts, lectures and intergenerational programs. NSSC helps older adults and their families near and far through a national network of service providers.
