A new dining option for Winnetka residents will be opening in the west Elm Street business district early next month.

Opening at the site of the former Jerry’s/Corner Cook’s location at 507 Chestnut St., the Taste on Chestnut restaurant is in the final stages of renovation to prepare for its grand opening.

In bringing his 20 years of experience to Winnetka, owner Steve Leviton said his new endeavor will bring a downtown experience for both food and service, with exceptional convenience and value.

“I told people in the community we were not going to redo, but retool the menu to reintroduce specials,” Leviton said. “We were already selling a lot of food off the specials. I could tell people were hungry for new food here.”

The 110-seat location is currently closed for a three-week renovation, but is expected to be open to the public Feb. 3, following an invitation-only grand opening the day before.

Once opened, guests will be able to enjoy the restaurant’s offering of cooking classes, catering services and an open kitchen, where diners can chat and get cooking tips from Executive Chef Sergio Correa.

With experience working in private clubs and hotel restaurants, Leviton has waited for the right moment to pursue his dream.

“At one point, I wanted to be out doing this for myself,” Leviton said. “When I found out this location was available, I knew it was right. It’s a dynamite location and I didn’t want to pass up this opportunity. The timing was right.”

Leviton took control of the location on Nov. 13, and spent six weeks interacting with existing customers and studying the operation of the restaurant.

“We want to keep this restaurant a focal point for the community, because it has been for over 12 years,” Leviton said. “We want to bring it to another level.”

As part of the renovation, a new waiting area will be constructed, along with an overhauled bar area, he said. The new bar will include added seating as well as an extensive wine list and cocktail menu, Leviton said.

The new menu will feature new lunch and dinner options, including salads and sandwiches, he said. With three dining rooms and a bar area, Taste on Chestnut is an ideal place for hosting a small or medium sized event, Leviton said.

With the renovation rapidly concluding, Leviton is eager to roll up his sleeves and go to work in serving the Winnetka community.

“I’m enjoying every bit of it,” Leviton said of his new venture. “Operationally, it’s a challenge getting out of the kitchen for a while to get the business up and running. We want to be able to meet the expectation of the neighborhood and the community. I think we can do that.”
